We have coined the term SRI, Static Robustness Index, to classify products and characterise their results in terms of silicon circuit protection and product longevity.

SRI. Static Robustness Index.

The SRI (Static Robustness Index) represents the amount of structural mass (glass, frame and reinforcements) used to protect each watt of nominal power.

It is a specific indicator of the laminate’s ability to absorb and distribute stress applied directly to the active surface, protecting the silicon circuit from impact, loads and localised deflection.

To calculate the SRI (Static Robustness Index), we compare the module’s mass with its nominal power.

To compare different construction models, it is necessary to introduce the concept of FRONT SRI. Front SRI represents the amount of structural mass concentrated on the front of the laminate (glass and upper laminate layers) in relation to nominal power. This mass protects the module against weather exposure and accidental damage potentially linked to foot traffic during installation, maintenance, cleaning or other activities. It is therefore essential not to fall below the minimum front-protection threshold required for the PV field application, such as flat roofs, pitched roofs or ground-mounted systems.

The most common comparison is between glass-polymer modules, where Front SRI is multiplied by 90%, and glass-glass modules, where Front SRI is multiplied by 50%.

In light of these considerations, the reference parameters are as follows:

A high SRI helps fight the three main enemies of silicon:

  • Micro-cracks: vibration and module deflection create invisible micro-fractures in the silicon. An SRI of 53.3 significantly improves silicon circuit integrity.
  • Snow and wind loads: a higher SRI improves load resistance and helps maintain circuit integrity even under significant pressure.
  • Thermal stress: more structural mass means greater thermal inertia, helping stabilise the micro-expansion of electrical contacts during heat peaks.

The IRS forms the structural foundation of the laminate, but it is through its integration with advanced technologies that protection of the silicon circuit is maximized. The SRI expresses the laminate’s structural basis, but protection of the silicon circuit is maximised when it is integrated with advanced technologies. In solutions such as X-CORE², the high-SRI laminate is combined with an evolved structural frame designed to distribute mechanical stress more efficiently and reduce module deformation. This combined approach further increases module stability and helps preserve circuit integrity over time, even in critical operating conditions.
